Kiwibank have a promotion for 100% Interest in your business – they say in their add Google 100% Interest to get more information. You may wonder why we would bother focussing on this and why I even blogged earlier about marketing and banks – it is not necessarily a Xebidy topic, although my points are exactly ideas I feel. Well the real reason was to prove a point.

Mat Weir, our lead developer, heard the Kiwibank ad on the radio and thought “I wonder if they have actually optimised their site properly for those terms”. A quick look revealed that they had not – so we thought we would give it a go to get to the top of the Google search results for terms around Kiwibank 100% Interest.

It was not hard – my blog post, a bit of work on Twitter and few retweets and within an hour we were number one in the organic results. Here is pixel proof:

Xebidy in number 1 spot for 100% Interest

What does that mean for you? Well, the most important thing it illustrates is the need for you to optimse your website correctly for terms that your customers will search for. The hi-jaking of competitor company keywords or company slogans is a legitimate search engine strategy. Obviously, it is made a lot harder if you have a website with good quality content that everyone wants to link to and are continually monitoring your keywords and are on top of phrases that your marketing department come up with that your customers might search.

In the meantime enough messing with the Kiwibank 100% Interest campaign (another good use of keywords) and back to work building websites and optimising our clients stuff.
